How Br'er Devil Outfoxed God

Image
By atheistnurse ~ O ne day while Br'er Devil was out roaming the earth he noticed how much Job tried to make God happy. In return God gave Job all kinds cool things and protected him. This made Job kind of self-righteous and pompous. Br'er Devil got a little riled up over that, but, as always he had a plan, and in his plan God was going to screw over his little buddy Job. All Br'er Devil had to do was convince God to let him torment the old fool, which wouldn’t be very hard considering that God was always ready to toot his own horn. So Br'er Devil moseyed over to see God and they had a nice little chit-chat. It didn’t take God long before he started bragging about himself. Then He pointed out how upright his favorite human was and how much Job loved God. God (who knows everything) even knew what the outcome would be if he brought up Job’s holiness to Br'er Devil, but He didn’t care. Br'er Devil saw his opportunity and pointed out that it was ea...

Noah's Ark Revisited

Image
By atheistnurse ~ M ost of us grew up with “nice” stories of the flood that included an ark with cute, smiling, little animals overflowing the deck. And don’t forget the pretty rainbow at the end of the story that symbolized a loving god’s promise to us. What about the terror of seeing your children and loved ones drown? Of seeing the floating corpses of your neighbors, family, and friends? The horror of feeling your lungs burning as you gasp for air and just breathe in water, knowing you are going to die? Of clinging to floating debris only to die a long slow death of exposure and/or starvation? Hmmm, not such a “cute” bible story anymore, is it? Estimates for the population of the earth at the time of the flood range from 2 million people and up. The bible says god “regretted” making man. This indicates god isn’t omniscient and that he didn’t see this coming. Whatever. God decides to wipe out the wickedness of man and drown everyone but Noah’s clan. It didn’t work....

The Taming of the Shrew God

Image
By atheistnurse ~ I believe that taming our environment is inherent in man’s nature. Domesticating the once wild cattle, sheep, and goats have given man access to dairy products, meat, leather, and fibers for cloth. When man tamed feral dogs he gained a protector, hunting partner, and companion. Taming the wild crops gave way to agriculture and a steadier supply of food. All of this was done for man’s benefit. So let us consider the concept of god (s). Primitive man had primitive gods. The wild, unpredictable, sometimes violent nature of these gods was part of their mystery, but primitive man was determined to use it to their advantage. Trying to figure out how to appease these gods included sacrifices of living beings, gifts of food, jewels, and precious metals. In return, man hoped for abundant crops, good hunting, big families, health, and protection from enemies. As primitive man progressed to a more cultured society, their gods did also. Enter the OT god. He cert...

Dear God -- Part II

Image
By atheistnurse ~ D ear God, I am married to an idiot. I know you told us women to submit to our husbands in ALL THINGS, but, honestly, why do we have to submit to an idiot? We are losing money on our cattle and goat ranch because of his stupid “Jacob Breeding Program,” (which he got from YOUR book). I have a degree in business and he didn’t even finish high school, but he won’t listen to me. And he keeps trying to get me to drink some foul smelling concoction right after he butchers a steer and has piles of fat and entrails everywhere. It’s creepy. The thing that is really concerning me is that we have three teenagers, and, well, you must know how teenagers are. Sometimes they are moody or mouthy or rebellious, but all in all they are good kids. Willy keeps telling them that You want disrespectful kids taken to the gates of the city and stoned to death. We all laughed the first time he said it, until we noticed this funny look in his eyes. And the growing pile of rocks...

The Questions Christians Can’t Answer

Image
By atheistnurse ~ H ow can a god that is described as loving, merciful, righteous, good, perfect, and just order his people to do unspeakable evil like murdering infants with a sword and letting soldiers rape young girls? And, if the LORD commanded this of his followers, then I ask, when is it OK to murder infants and rape young girls? When the people are considered “evil” is it justified? I have posted these very questions on the ExChristian blog sites many times and not once has a xtian ever even attempted to answer it. How can they possibly reconcile a good god with these horrible evils? They can’t without sounding like lunatics who worship a baby killing, child raping god that they consistently label as loving and good. Throughout the OT, god kills and orders the killing of MILLIONS of people. Not just “wicked” adults but innocent babies and children and condones the raping of children. How can this be? Let’s look at a few verses: Numbers 31:17 : “Now therefore, ...

Dear God

Image
By atheistnurse ~ D ear God, I tried your breeding tips as outlined in your book Genesis 30:37-43 with my goats and cattle and didn’t have any results. I cut the skin off tree branches and stuck them in my livestock’s watering place and, well, nothing happened. Jacob did real good with it, but I am not having the same results. People have laughed at me for believing the Creator of the Universe might know something about livestock breeding, but I know your Word is inerrant, so if you could just give me some kind of sign on why I am not getting results I would appreciate it cause I really want to stick it to those naysayers who think your Word is just silly superstitious nonsense. I hope you have noticed how I have defended you from others who say you sure sound gay in the OT when you go on and on about decorating your temple and designing clothes with fringes, bells, jewels, and pomegranates. You also use purple a lot. I think they sound cool, but, you know homosexual men real...

A Holey Fairy Tale

Image
By atheistnurse ~ O nce upon a time there was nothing. But in that nothing was an omnipotent god. This god wasn’t made by anything - he was just always there -- hanging out in nothingness for eternity ( Don’t spend a lot of time wondering how this could be, just believe it). You might think he was bored, lazy, or unimaginative because he didn’t do anything, but he was thinking of what he was going to do. It just took him a really long time to come up with a good plan. He thought of talking snakes, talking donkeys, superhuman men who lost their power when their hair was cut, killing people for picking up sticks on his day, making a lot of stupid rules that would be really hard to follow so he could punish them for not following them, wiping out whole communities of men, women, and children, and –oooh!! the best part!! – he would make an evil, powerful angel who would tempt people and cause people to turn away from god so he could put those people in a place of torment for al...

Christian Euphemisms

Image
By Atheistnurse ~ I have often heard various phrases used over and over again to obscure the unexplainable Christian “truths.” But what do they really mean? Let’s look at some: “It is a deep spiritual truth, too complex for us to grasp.” Translation: “I don’t know what the fuck this means, but I am going to believe it anyway.” This euphemism is commonly used to explain bullshit theology that any normal, thinking person would immediately chalk up to being ridiculous such as the trinity (1+1+11), a "loving and just" god’s cruel actions in the bible, predestination vs. freewill, eternal torturing of good people who don’t bow down and worship a megalomaniac god, etc. “God works in mysterious ways.” Translation: “Wow! We didn’t see that coming and we can’t explain it to save our lives, but…” This is usually used when the reality doesn’t match up with what a christian would assume would happen according to god’s will. “God doesn’t give us more than we can bear.” Tr...

God the Baby Killer

Image
By atheistnurse ~ M any Christians are staunch anti-abortionists because, well, God just loves little children. After all, the bible says a lot of stuff about how god made us, like Isaiah 44:24 : “This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.” Image by obo-bobolina via Flickr The old guy just can’t resist an opportunity to toot his own horn. Over and over and over… So apparently god’s a little artsy-craftsy and his hobby (when he isn’t stretching out the heavens and spreading the earth all by himself) is forming little fetuses in women’s wombs. So there you have it. God loves little babies and it is a dire sin to have an abortion and destroy his handiwork. What amazes me about all the Christian pro-life movement is the complete denial of the countless babies and pregnant women that god has smote over the centuries as recorded in ...

Gullible me

Image
By atheistnurse ~ O K. So I get the news I had the big "C." Shock, fear, and then I got religious. Doesn't everyone who has a potentially fatal diagnosis? No? Well, call me gullible. At the time it gave peace to think that a loving benevolent god was in charge and I could trust him to take care of me. I think that is religion's most powerful draw--a psychological crutch to deal with things we don't want to deal with. Fast forward to a successful treatment. I am totally enmeshed in a church by that time. I teach Sunday school, volunteer for almost everything, lead people to the lord, home-school my kids teaching them creationism.... You get the idea. I was totally brainwashed. Then my husband got a traumatic brain injury in an automobile accident. He went from a funny, nice guy to an angry, selfish, unpredictable, childish man. It was the hardest freaking thing I ever lived through. I prayed and prayed and prayed because it was horrible and I bel...
