Taking our holiday back

Image
By Dethblight ~ I posted this last year around the holidays, but unfortunately I waited too long and it did not appear on the front page until after the holiday season was over. I received several comments from people saying that they found this article very helpful in trying to find a non-christian way to celebrate the holidays, so I thought I'd re-post it this year BEFORE the holidays are over. Enjoy! L et me start by saying that while I do identify myself as an Asatruan, from a practical standpoint I know that the existence of Odin , Thor, Asgard, etc are about as likely as the existence of Yahweh, Jesus, and so on. However, I do identify with the principles and ideals of my ancestral religion, and I like our mythos much better than that associated with other religions! Many years ago our ancestors (this will apply to most peoples of the world, but for the purposes of this article I mean Northern Europeans) were forced to adopt Christianity by means of trickery, deceit...

Ex-Tian vs Mom

Image
By Dethblight ~ T oday, (for no particular reason), I started thinking about something my Mom said when I first came out of the religious closet to her. I told her that I no longer believed in Christianity, and she automatically assumed that this was due to my experiences in the army. At the time, I immediately said "no", but now I realize that this may have played a role in the change of my beliefs... just not in the way that she meant. When I first told her that I no longer believed in Christianity and the bible (though I was still a Deist at the time), her first response was something along the lines of "I know that you have experienced some horrible things...". While I thought nothing of it at the time, I now find it interesting that she (and most other Christians) assume that I lost faith once I saw the dark side of humanity for myself. To her (and them), the reason for my abandoning Christianity was somewhere between anger at God and assuming that ...

A replacement philosophy

Image
By Dethblight ~ A fter I left Christianity, I spent quite some time looking for a "replacement philosophy". A philosophy is a nice thing to have... it's a nice neat little package we can show to the world when they ask us what we believe. It is the distilled essence of who we see ourselves to be. Everyone else has an ism, so we feel like we need one as well. Even with atheism, many people treat it as a belief system, or a summary of beliefs, rather than the lack of belief that it actually is. But maybe that's the problem. It occurred to me about two months ago, that maybe I don't need an ism, or a replacement philosophy. Ironically, once I stopped looking for a replacement philosophy, one kind of fell into my lap. Once I stopped looking for a replacement philosophy, I stumbled onto the same basic idea that Epicurus and Bentham had before me. It seems to me, that once you remove God from the equation, life becomes meaningless. Most people, if you say ...

Another "stalemate"

Image
By Dethblight ~ S ometimes I wonder why I even bother... then I remember sites like this and the testimonials they contain about how the seed of doubt was planted. The following is a facebook conversation I had with a friend of mine (we'll call him "L")who for a long time was largely atheistic/ agnostic/ "I don't really care about religion", but then was "saved" a few years ago. L: "It’s especially cool that Will Smith is developing the project ($$$), will produce the project ($$$), and is planning to cast a minor over whose income he has full legal control ($$$). It’s just fun stuff.- gabe from videogum.com. (he's also a scientoligist (lololol forever)) so this guy is using his children to get "audit" money for his family. what a dirtbag cult loser" Responses from his other friends. L: "Sorry I don't believe misleading money sapping cults should be allowed. I think the people who "audit" should ...

Wish I hadn't had to write this

Image
By Dethblight ~ I was very saddened today. I commented on a facebook photo of one of my old Army buddies, and as a result, I received eleven friend requests from other friends of mine who I had served and gone to war with who happened to be on his friend list but not mine. Needless to say I was very happy and excited to reconnect with these guys. There is a special bond between Infantrymen who have engaged the enemy together and lost dear friends which nothing else I have seen or experienced can compare to. If you've watched Band of Brothers , you can get some small taste of what I'm talking about. Image by vpickering via Flickr One of these, who we'll call 'D', was one of my better friends back then, and I was especially excited to have found him again. However, upon opening his profile, I was immediately accosted by his most recent post. He had started the post by declaring that it was a sad day because "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ( DADT...

I'm Done

Image
By Dethblight ~ T hat’s it, I’m done. When I first deconverted I was of the mind that we apostates and other nonbelievers should hold back our bile unless provoked, and that we should all make nice. Well screw that. I’m done pandering to these idiots for fear of hurting feelings or alienating my mom, or any other reason. They don’t make nice with us, why should we make nice with them? We are a source of derision and a cautionary tale to them. We apostates are the scum of the earth, whether they say it out loud or not. Here it is plain and simple: Christians are idiots. Most religious people are, but Christianity is what I know, so that’s what I’m going to focus on. Don’t worry, I’m not excluding myself, I was an idiot too back when I believed. Image by Axel Bührmann via Flickr If you are a Christian, then there are three possibilities, all of which are equally stupid. The first scenario is that you have never examined your religion. You believe it just because you wer...
