By The Thinking Atheist ~ R ecently I have been getting more and more leery of Religion. That in and of itself isn't anything surprising, but I have come to the rather disturbing, but expected conclusion that religion as a whole is detrimental to society and humankind. Why do I think this? For many reasons. First off, what is religion? It is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods. At least, that is what the major religions could be looked at, and what Google tells us- anything else is just semantics. So here you have 7 Billion people, and a good deal of that population believes- without proof, evidence, anything of that nature- in an all-powerful being. Once again, no evidence, not the slightest bit of supporting information to that outrageous claim. Extraordinary claims need to be met with extraordinary evidence, after all, and religion had NO evidence to speak of. (Well, except a crying statue, but we'll get to that ...

O ne thing that I haven't yet disclosed is that I used to go to a Catholic School . Before I start, let me make clear that this isn't a rant about how I "didn't want to go", or how BS it is that I had to go there. This is about death. I always found it both horrifying and amusing at how religious people could write a person's death off by saying "God needed him", "It was his time", or any variation of that. Because, let's be frank, death is a sudden and sometimes gruesome thing, and for it to be written off and even condoned is not what a healthy person would do. Secondly, I would like to say that I appreciate any comments, and I read every one of them- some were amusing, while with others I could commiserate. Now, onto my second story! M y situation with my mother and sister was always strained -- my mother was religious, and always blamed me in anything where my sister was involved. In other words, there was some extreme favoritism. My father, on the other hand, wasn't really a Christian, but he didn't identify as an Atheist either. He mostly kept his opinion on religion to himself, and on the odd occasion when I ranted to him about religion, he would just say "I understand, but it's better not to blasphemy".
